Jacob’s Pillow Dance 2016 | Aspen Santa Fe Ballet & Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe
First of all, this is such a thrill. I wait all year long for this, and it’s finally, finally here. Opening week at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival!!
We had really beautiful weather on opening day, and it’s just awesome to be among these artists again, to see the smiling patrons on campus enjoying outdoor performances, exploring the exhibits, and world-class shows. A huge group of people came together to see Inside/Out, and my friend Eric Limon, a fellow wedding photographer in the Berkshires, was one of them. It’s fun to run into friends on the job so often.

Week 1: Aspen Santa Fe Ballet in the Ted Shawn Theatre
Craig Black of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet is an alumni of The School at Jacob’s Pillow, so it’s great to see him with the company, performing professionally. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet performed one piece in costume for us at dress rehearsal – Alejandro Cerrudo’s (Hubbard Street Dance Chicago) Silent Ghost. The piece was really dark, so I moved around the theater a lot to maximize my use of the light.

Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe in the Doris Duke Theatre
Juan Siddi Flamenco is also from Santa Fe – they’re now a part of the same company – and even though I only saw and photographed about ten minutes of their finale in costume, I was immediately impressed by their energy. The dancers came on stage with such zest and gusto… Juan Siddi, the director and one of the dancers, lifted me out of my chair, he was so passionate and intense. It was such a pleasure to photograph them, even for such a short segment of the work.

David Parker’s The Bang Group and Emery LeCrone Dance were the first two Inside/Out shows of the summer. David and Emery are both alumni of The School at Jacob’s Pillow. It’s an extra warm feeling when an alumni comes back and performs with their professional group.
I’m the luckiest guy in the world that I get to be the Festival Photographer and shoot every summer at such a beautiful place. I never take it for granted, and I’m always inspired by the beauty and the warmth of the community here.
What a blessing.
