Jacob’s Pillow Dance Photos | End of Summer at Inside/Out
I tell my photo interns during the orientation at the beginning of every summer about how the light changes throughout the Festival.
The light at the beginning of the summer at Jacob’s Pillow is just a few days after the solstice. It’s bright and warm. The sun is still high in the sky at 6:15pm. The angle it hits the stage and the performers is more overhead. By the third week of July the quality of that evening light has shifted. And by the end of August it’s completely different. It’s cooler. It’s behind the dancers. It becomes more silhouette-y.
This summer more than ever, the variety of dance we photographed at Inside/Out was fantastic. Just like the evening light, the dance on the stage was vastly different night to night. That makes shooting in this space so challenging, so exciting and so new every time. It’s by far the most dynamic and gorgeous place to dance anywhere. I’m grateful for 40 opportunities to shoot there every summer.
