Musicians at The Pillow | Jacob’s Pillow Dance Photos 2016
I was given a special assignment to make images with as many of these musicians as possible, but to do it outside the theater in a more natural setting that is iconic to the Pillow.

Gauthier Dance is back at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival this week. Last year, they had a sold out show in the Doris Duke Theatre! They’re in the Ted Shawn this year, and they are performing a piece I recognized from years ago – Cantata by Mauro Bigonzetti.
Every summer, my wife, dance videographer Nel Shelby, and I move back into our cabin in the Berkshires to spend the summer photographing and filming the incredible artists who perform at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. The festival runs for 10 weeks and each week includes 2 new mainstage dance performances and 4 free outdoor performances.
The companies performing in the Ted Shawn Theatre and the Doris Duke Theatre have their dress rehearsals every Wednesday afternoon during Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. They happen between 2pm and 5pm, and they often overlap. These dress rehearsals are my only time to photograph the companies to make images for the press to use.
There was a special buzz around the Pillow having Daniil here, and all the other dancers – extraordinary American Ballet Theatre company members Isabella Boylston, Alexandre Hammoudi, Blaine Hoven, Calvin Royal III, Hee Seo, Cassandra Trenary, and James Whiteside, as well as Céline Cassone, a special guest artist from Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. (You have to be a killer dancer to have bold red hair like Céline and get away with it. She’s awesome.)
